Dina-Perla Portnaar grew up in a strict orthodox Jewish environment in Amsterdam. At home, she was more or less terrorized by her mentally ill mother and her half-brother. At fifteen, she decided to go to a ‘normal’ secondary school, instead of the Cheider, the only Jewish Orthodox school in the Netherlands. When she was eighteen, she fled home and cut off all contact. Fourteen years after this defining moment, she has written her story in her book called Exodus from the Lighthouse, Exodus uit de vuurtoren.
